傅雷是二十世紀最享負盛名的中國翻譯家之一;他在主流規範傾向於充分性的年代,實踐一種傾向於可接受性的翻譯主張,形成了獨特的翻譯風格。他的「神似論」並非沒有爭議性;但由於他的文學名聲,很少有人直接批評他,卻有論者試圖修正他的理論。
本文認為,傅雷的大部分讀者並不熟悉西方文化,而法國文學在當時的中國翻譯文學多元系統之中處於邊緣位置,因此傅雷的翻譯策略是成功的。但是,在充分性與可接受性之間所作的選擇,通常要付出代價,所以翻譯策略在本質上沒有優劣之分。
從多元系統論的角度看來,傅雷的翻譯家名聲,主要是由他的翻譯策略決定的。傾向於可接受性的策略,能讓高明的譯者有用武之地;而在語言層面上的歸化,可能在一定程度上導致作品「國籍」的歸化,令作品及其生產者得以轉化為有價值的文化貨物。
